Setting up Microsoft Remote Desktop on a Microsoft Surface or other High Resolution Notebook

If you have a machine which has a high resolution, like a Microsoft Surface Pro or a Dell XPS the resolution means the remote connection will appear very small. Luckily there is a solution for this. You will need to download an application from the Microsoft Store.

  1. First step is to open the Microsoft Store
  1. Search for the application Microsoft Remote Desktop
  1. Click on Get to install the application, and let it install. Once this has been installed, you can find it in the start menu as shown below.
  1. Find the new application and launch it. You will find it in the start menu (second one down in the image above).
  1. Once you have launched it, click on the +Add button to create a new connection.
  1. Click on the Desktop to connect to a PC in your office or a Remote Desktop Server.
  1. In the PC name, enter the name of the computer or the IP Address. This is something we will have provided to you. In the Display Name field, enter something you want to know it by, for example perhaps My Office Machine. Click on the Show more text to see more information.
  1. Scroll down the options.
  1. You should not need to change any of the above settings. Scroll down further.
  1. For the high resolution machines where the text appears too small, you will want to select an option to Set my remote desktop resolution to. I would usually suggest the 1920 x 1080 resolution as this is the best trade off, but you can try some different settings to see what works for you. Once you have done this, click on Save.
  1. You should now see the new connection you just made. Double click on the new connection, and it will start the connection to your machine.
  1. You should see the connection attempting. Next a prompt should pop up asking you for the credentials to log onto the machine.
  1. This is just your standard login, and doesn’t require your two factor authentication code. Click OK to continue.
  2. You should now be successfully connected to your machine in the office. Should you have any issues, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
